BACCHUS Consortium Meeting

I attended the 4th BACCHUS consortium meeting in Bratislava representing Creme Global as the dietary intake expert partner in the EU Framework 7 funded project.

Updates on studies of bioactives in various foods kicked off the proceedings in the Crown Plaza hotel in the picturesque Old Town. Processing techniques to preserve these precious entities were presented as well as gut stability studies and specific cultivars which yield remarkably high levels of bioactives. Foods formally discussed included apple, meat, aronia and wheat, with many more being the subjects of conversations over coffee!

Work package 3 discussions saw the demonstration of the eBasis Creme Global Tool which will be made available to SMEs and other interested stakeholders to query survey intake databases of four European countries next year. Various statistics of bioactive compound intakes from selected foods will be analysable to users.

As the darkness fell, we climbed to the hilltop Castle that overlooks the city and enjoyed a banquet of local fare fit for a king. We enjoyed the jovial atmosphere of the Christmas markets and sampled the local warming Glüwine, a great source of anthocyanins!
