Greetings,

In this issue we have information on new Scientific Publications, involving CREMe, that are now available and a reminder to apply for your CRN password.

EFSA Opinion on Plant Protection Products

The "Opinion of the Scientific Panel on Plant protection products and their Residues on acute dietary intake assessment of pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables" has now been adopted by EFSA and is published online.

CREMe was involved in the opinion as invited experts. The CREMe Food Safety probabilistic model was used to give a detailed estimate of the Irish population exposure to a range of pesticides in food. These results were compared to the IESTI estimates in the opinion.

Probabilistic modelling of European consumer exposure to cosmetic products

The paper "Probabilistic modelling of European consumer exposure to cosmetic products" has been accepted for publication in Food and Chemical Toxicology. The paper was written by C. McNamara et al. as part of the Colipa study.

The aim of this study was to provide quantitative information on habits and practices of consumers in the European Union. In order to make use of the most up-to-date investigative methods of consumers' habits tracking and of the most appropriate information technology methods, CREMe Ltd. was chosen to perform the data analysis and statistical modeling project.

Methodology:

The European exposure distributions produced in this study provide a reflection of the daily amount of product used by consumers. This was achieved by combining data from two large European databases on cosmetic usage with data from a large habits and practices study, and analysing the combined data using the CREMe exposure modelling computer program (Monte Carlo analysis), to produce a population distribution curve of exposure.

Target Products:

  • Shampoo
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorant Spray
  • Deodorant Non-Spray
  • Body Lotion
  • Facial Moisturiser
  • Lipstick
This study combines up-to-date data on daily quantities of use of seven typical cosmetic products with relevant body weights. These exposure results were generated using probabilistic analysis to provide a reliable prediction for the European population. The McNamara and Hall papers below describe the study in detail.
