The Opportunity
We are looking for a proactive and curious scientist with a strong interest in data and quantitative analysis to join our Food & Nutrition team. The ideal candidate will have a background in food science or a related scientific discipline, with knowledge or experience in exposure science, dietary intake assessment or food safety. They will be highly numerate, adaptable and comfortable applying scientific thinking to complex data and practical analytical problems.

The role will involve a diverse range of projects, including exposure assessment, dietary intake modelling, food safety, risk assessment and other scientific data and modelling projects. This may include scientific research, data analysis, interpretation of results and development of analytical approaches, as well as exploring new datasets and methodologies.

Working within a multidisciplinary team spanning food science, nutrition, data science and software development, the successful candidate will collaborate across disciplines to develop practical solutions and will also provide scientific support to business development in developing new opportunities and solutions for clients.
Requirements
- Honours degree (2.1 or higher) in Food Science or a related scientific discipline, such as Nutrition, Food Safety, Microbiology, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Public Health, Epidemiology or similar.
- At least two years of relevant work experience in a scientific, analytical or data-focused role.
- Knowledge or experience in exposure science, dietary intake assessment, food safety, food regulation or regulatory science.
- Strong ability to manage, analyse and interpret scientific data and statistical results.
- Experience working with complex real-world datasets, including data cleaning, validation, quality checking and identifying data limitations.
- Strong data manipulation skills using spreadsheets or other data analysis tools.
- Ability to understand scientific questions and translate them into practical data and analytical requirements.
- Strong research skills and experience identifying, evaluating and interpreting scientific literature, data sources and other relevant information.
- Excellent scientific and technical writing skills, including the ability to clearly document methodologies, assumptions, data definitions and analytical findings.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-facing skills, with the ability to present scientific and analytical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

The following, while not essential, are highly desirable:

- Experience using programming languages, preferably Python or SQL, for scientific data analysis, data processing or automation.
- Experience working with relational databases, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or similar.
- Experience applying statistical modelling, machine learning or predictive modelling techniques to scientific or real-world datasets.
- Experience working with food consumption databases, such as IUNA, NDNS or NHANES.
- Experience with quantitative food safety risk assessment, risk ranking, predictive microbiology or microbial risk modelling.
- Experience developing data visualisations, dashboards or business intelligence solutions using tools such as Amazon QuickSight or similar.
- Experience integrating and harmonising scientific data from multiple sources, formats or organisations for analytical use.
