Activating the engagement of stakeholders, reformulation of foods, adequate monitoring systems for sources in the diet, along with the provision of proper and meaningful information to consumers about the importance of reducing salt intakes, are all essential in order to reduce the burden of noncommunicable diseases (WHO, 2013). To this end, it is important to analyse and understand population consumption habits.
Creme Food® offers a variety of tools designed to enable you to analyse consumption data in an easy and accurate way. For example, within Creme Food®, it is possible to analyse the key foods that contribute to sodium intake in a population and to profile the salt concentrations in products on the market.
The Data Plotting and Statistics Tool allow you to carry out analysis including calculating statistics and plotting data. This tool enables you to plot distributions of baseline sodium intakes and intakes after modelling policy changes and product reformulations. This can be carried out for total population or for specific demographics.
The tool also enables you to assess foods or food groups that are high contributors to sodium intake by plotting the sodium content of foods or food groups, along with the sodium intakes per eating event. This type of data analysis can help when making informed decisions on consumer intakes and reformulation targets.
Data Filtering, Selecting Data for Statistical Analysis and Plotting
Using this tool, a range of statistics can be calculated from data i.e. mean, min or max chemical concentrations. From the statistical output (see figure below), we can see that the sodium concentration of bacon and ham consumed in Ireland ranges from 2.2g/100g to 27g/100g*.

Once you have selected the data of interest, you can create various graph types (e.g. histogram, scatterplot, pie chart, etc.) from the data you can also view the cumulative frequency curve. You can also fit distributions to the data using a choice of log-likelihood, KS P value or ChiSq P value.
